Hero Firefighter from Commack, Long Island, New York who Volunteered at Firehouse directly across from World Trade Center to hike the 2,200-miles on Appalachian Trail to raise funds for Paws of War and awareness for veterans and first responders facing mental health challenges
Robert Weisberg is a volunteer firefighter from Commack who heroically volunteered on 9/11/2001 to support the FDNY firefighters by responding to 10 House, on Liberty Street, directly across from the Twin Towers.
After the first plane hit the towers, he was assigned with creating one of the first triage locations at the World Trade Center. After additional medical resources arrived, he quickly offered to go with the firefighters who entered the World Trade Center complex but was asked to continue providing medical aid. Just a few minutes later, all the firefighters who left the firehouse lost their lives. While providing support, Weisberg and approximately 40 others in the firehouse became trapped when the first tower collapsed and again after the second tower collapsed. He was injured and experienced firsthand the horrors and aftermath of the tragic events of this day that changed history. This traumatic experience has had an impact on Weisberg’s life as he continues to suffer from PTSD.
Walking, hiking and being outdoors in nature are some of Rob’s favorite and relaxing activities. He decided to take this interest and passion for the outdoors to the next level and embark on a life-changing journey. On March 11, Weisberg will start hiking the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail in Georgia and plans to complete the hike on September 11, 2023 in Maine.
Weisberg has been a volunteer firefighter in Commack for the past 29 years. He serves his community and risks his life to save others. Weisberg is using his journey to raise money to support Nesconset, NY-based non-profit Paws of War, as well as veterans and first responders who also suffer from PTSD. Weisberg chose to raise money for Paws of War because of all the benevolent work they do for our heroes. Paws of War also serves as a community support center where Weisberg, veterans and other first responders can band together, build bonds and share comradery.
His goal is to raise $100,000 over the next six months to give back to his fellow heroes in need.
